Tell our readers about your professional background.

So, I started working when I was sixteen, in retail. It set the stage for my career. I moved into the design industry and spent sixteen years with the same company. I started as a receptionist, became a PA, then a traffic manager, and finally a production manager. When my husband’s job required us to be more flexible, I became a virtual assistant. This change allowed me to work from home and learn new skills, from admin support to creating websites.

Where are you currently based and what do you do?

During seven months of the year, I am based in Cape Town. Then, for five months, I am in Mbombela (Nelspruit). Currently, I work full-time as a Project Manager for a company in JHB, and I assist Virtual PA Studio with occasional tasks.

What made you decide to change your career and work for VPA?

The primary driver for my career change was the need for flexibility. My husband’s career required frequent travel, and I needed a role that allowed me to work from home while still being able to travel across the country as required. The virtual assistant industry offered the perfect balance, giving me the freedom to manage both my professional and personal commitments.

Can you share some highlights or success stories in your journey?

One of the most significant highlights in my career has been the creative freedom and trust that Storm has consistently placed in me over the years. This has allowed me to grow, experiment, and take ownership of my work, which boosted my confidence. The ability to express my creativity while being fully supported has been empowering and rewarding, making this journey truly fulfilling.

Are there any challenges you noticed in the industry?

It has been challenging to balance my workload in the virtual assistant industry with my permanent job. It has been difficult to step back from certain projects that I was passionate about, but I know it’s necessary for my overall well-being.

What is trending now regarding virtual assistance in your area of expertise?

The virtual assistant industry has become increasingly saturated, with many people turning to hybrid work models to achieve work flexibility. Also, the rapid advancement of AI has dramatically changed the landscape. Tasks that once required human input are now automated, making it challenging for VAs to compete. While there’s still unmatched value in the individualised touch that a VA can provide, it is undeniable that the growing capabilities of AI are reshaping the industry at a rapid pace.

Why should start-ups, small businesses, or large companies use VPA services?

The human factor that VPA brings is unmatched. Storm and Roisin’s passion and dedication to their work set VPA apart. Their passion is reflected in the quality of the services provided and, in the energy and care their entire team embodies. It is the culture and genuine investment in clients’ success that makes VPA invaluable for businesses of all sizes.
